While Edward has significant experience and expertise in all areas of estate planning, he spends most of his time working with high net worth individuals, families, and business owners on strategies designed to reduce exposure to gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax.\n \nEdward is well-versed in the use and implementation of sophisticated estate planning techniques, including grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), intentionally defective grantor trusts (IDGTs), irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs), spousal lifetime access trusts (SLATs), and other dynasty trust arrangements.\n \nJim Thomson represents families, fiduciaries, individuals, and family businesses in matters pertaining to estate planning, estate and trust administration, estate and trust litigation, business succession planning and charitable giving. He assists clients by drafting wills and trusts, advising clients on tax minimization strategies, and guiding families through the estate administration process. Jim also provides guidance to charitable trusts, higher education institutions, and other charities regarding charitable gift solicitation and administration. Jim also serves as a member of Lathrop GPM’s Associate Recruiting Committee.\n
